As I have begun tallying the results from the recent survey (have only tallied about 500 thus far) one statistic really stands out - the age of the average custom rod builder. Fully 3/4 of those responding so far are over the age of 55. A full 1/2 are over the age of 65.

I have another 2000 or so to tally, and more come in each day, but I think I'm far enough along to see a pattern that I don't think will necessarily change as more results are counted.

Hi Tom,
You can add another one to the over 55's. Haven't got my mag yet so there is no chance to get it back to you in time.

Very, very few. Less than 25 out of 500 in fact.

Of course, this can all change as I tally more surveys, but even at just the 500 mark I believe I can get an idea of the overall picture that I'll have at the end.

I'm curious to know what the average length of time guys have been doing this is? Are guys over 55 picking this up new or have they all been building rods for quite some time. Maybe a mix?

I was less than 25 when I built my first rod.
An interesting tidbit, Bill Eshelman taught Methuselah to build.

Not really surprising.
As fishing license sales continue to fall and children no longer have time to fish, that age will continue to climb until we pass.
