How many of you have sold rods overseas? Are there any problems/regulations to be aware of? This is a first for me and want to know if I am about to get in over my head?

Thanks!

Hi Hal

I am located in Australia and I purchase many thousands of dollars of fishing equipment from the USA. I can offer some limited advice from the purchase side.

1. The biggest issue we face OS pruchases of rods is breakage or damage in transport. Use rod tubes, reinforcement have FRAGILE printed everywhere and use reputable carriers with insurnace. e.g. FEDEX is awesome.

2. Australia has a $1000 limit, including freight charges, prior to have to pay duty. There are some vendors that offer to put a lesser value and "GIFT" on packages. This is essentially opening YOU and the CUSTOMER to be liable for additional charges etc. Make it clear that you will declare the correct amount on the invoice, wont put GIFT on the invoices etc

3. Make sure you have your Rules of Engagement (terms and conditions) for the sale clear and easily accessible prior to the sale. That is 1. The customer is responsible for any duty, taxes etc etc etc 2. What is required if something is damaged in shipping (see above regarding insurnace) 3. what about warranty???? Sometimes it is too hard to send back to the country of origin, sometimes it is expensive - who bares this cost??? This is what you need to have as a contract prior to shipping the goods.

These are the main things I think of when purchasing from oversea's.

Regards Adam

Hi Hal
I sold many rods over seas (China, Honkong, Italy, Germany, Poland, Hungary, Rumania, France, Holland, Austria the list would keep going, but this shows you I have done a lot.
Two things are very important for you:
That you got the Money. (I only take Pay pal or Money Order from Over seas, No Credit cards!)
You have to have the Bill in three copies for the Logistic Company, they need it for Customs, and I use Bax Global they are specialized in over seas transfers. You could also use FEDEX but they might cost more, for Asian countries I use Super Parcel Express, they are Chinese and know what to do in these Countries.
If you need any help, E-mail me. I would definite do it, all them sale to us, so why should we not sale to them.
Best Regards Mark Crouse

If you do feather work be sure you have all the paperwork that identifies source of feathers as NOT being from CITES protected species, or domestic USA songbirds or there is a good chance of serious problems.

Pack properly, the best packing i have seen by far by sponsors on the left is by Lance at Swampland. He should put on a seminaar at a future ICRBE for guys who ship rods.
Mudhole is pretty Good too. My wife and I owned a freighting company that operated out of Africa for 10 years and when you see what happens to your goods in transit, you will know why those bits of bubble plastic etc inside the PVC tube is needed.
