I have a set of recoil casting guides from a St Croix Extreme casting rod, Med Heavy, fast act. 7', rod, I am trying to find out the size of each one, my ? is, How do they measure the guide, is it by the ID or the OD when they put down the size?

Lorenzo,

The answer to this question interests me, also. For my first attempt at building a fly rod, the REC single foot fly guides (RSFXB) were ordered in their size 6. In my ignorance, the assumption was that the O.D. would match the standard for ceramic guides. When they arrived it was surprising to see how large they are. The I.D. on these guides compares closely to Fuji's size 10 alconites!

I've tried in vein to find an answer to the same question elsewhere. My email to REC asking for a size chart of their guides was not answered. Tom K's book does not talk about fly guide sizes, only fly rod stripper guide sizes. Dale Clemens' says in his book that there is no size standard for snake guides among manufacturers. No luck so far.

Short of buying each size REC guide and measuring them, it is my hope, as well, someone here will know.

Russell,

This is just what I was looking for. Thanks.

I was looking for such a page on their website before. Since your post, I tried again with no luck. Don't know where you found it.

Poor Lorenzo. He still needs a similar specs page for his casting guides.

Sorry Lorenzo, I didn't mean to hijack your thread. lol.

Generally guides go by the ID of the Frame....as in OD of the insert.

Those that don't know think it will be ID of the insert. So a guide with no insert, like REC or Minimas, will end up with a 6 being a lot bigger of an opening than ones with inserts like SIC.

Hi, Lorenzo,
On pg 28 of RodMaker Vol 14 Issue #3 is an article regarding "Guide & Tiptop Sizing".
This may help you.
