I am trying to size awinding check to fit in front of the reel seat, of a rod that has a diameter of .59 of an inch or 14.99 mm, at the butt end , so I am wondering at 15 or 16 inches up the rod how much in mm's will it taper too. if any, I am thinking I should order a 14 or 14.5 mm ID winding check, would that be chancing it, that it might bet too small? If anyone has any suggestion please let me read them I am trying to get this rod started before the first week of July. Thank you.

Definitely buy a cheap pair of Calipers and you will not have to wonder anymore. I recently had a check that was slightly smaller than it should have been and I just lightly sanded the inside of it.

I second the caliper. I just got one through Mud Hole and it was not that expensive. Now I don't have to guess. But what kind of winding check are you getting? if it is the rubber kind, they do stretch a bit sliding them into place. Get a few, in different sizes, they don't cost that much. If it is a metal one, I would say see if you can find someone with calipers to measure the blank.

I just measured the blank, But thanks, I ordered 14mm ID check, they are the ones that go over the new SK reel seats from Fuji, they look nice and not to much of a blingy look if you know what that means, its just a black winding check but is more shinnier then the rubber checks. I could not believe that the blank would taper as much as a mm in just 15 or 16inches.

Is there a formula where you can calculate the size of the winding check so you can order it at the same time as the blank?

You need to interpolate to get the diameter. First, subtract the butt diameter from the tip diameter. Take this number and divide it by the overall length of the blank. This will give you the ratio in which the blank is tapering. Multiply this ration by the length from the butt to where you want to place the winding check. This will give you the difference in diameter from the butt. Subtract that number from the butt diameter and you have the diameter at that point along the blank. Keep in mind to always convert and use the same units (inches, mm, etc.) I tend to purchase the size I calculate and one size larger.

Check your email.... I forwarded an XL spreadsheet that does the winding check calcs for you. I wish I remembered who shared it on this site a couple years ago, but old age is settin' in quick. In any case I hope the spreadsheet helps... but it still doesn't replace a set of calipers if you have the blank on hand.
