Light Solid glass blanks?

Does anyone know of a source for light, solid fiberglass rod blanks? A friend of mine asked me about building some kids rods (6 year olds). I'd like to make them of solid glass for ultimate durability. Maybe 5 to 6 feet long. "Whippy" would be fine as they would be more fun for the kids. I've looked at Jann's but they're all a little heavier /longer than I'd like to use. Re: Light Solid glass blanks?

If you can't find any glass blanks, check out the 5'6" graphite ones from Mudhole. They are quite durable, and very light. George Forster Fort Collins, CO Re: Light Solid glass blanks?

Ken,
If the blanks are too long - cut length off of the butt of the rod until they are the right lenght. If you are talking physical light weight and use the word solid fiberglass - it is a tough thing to have in the same sentence. i.e. solid fiberglass rod and physical light weight are not compatible. Solid implies more weight than a hollow rod. I agree with Georges comments on the use of Mudholes graphite blanks. I have built several of the 5'6" light action rods for children and they have worked very well: [www.mudhole.com] You can also get them in your choice of several different colors at no added cost. p.s. If you are working with yournger children and are fishing for pan fish, it is tough to beat a simple no reel fiberglass crappie rod with the line tied to the end of the rod. Drop the line, catch the fish, flip the fish into the boat with no reeling. Then, you take the blank, put a tip on the rod, and you are done. Tie the ine to the tip and go fishing. The blank is about the right size for small hands to grip. No further work required. Roger Re: Light Solid glass blanks?

You might want to look at the Batson SPG E-glass blanks.
They are lighter in weight than solid glass and very dureable. The SPG601 or 701 is popular for smaller fish applications. The price is right too! Ron,
I had glanced at the Batson web site, but I must have overlooked these blanks. Good suggestion! Roger Re: Light Solid glass blanks?

Sorry for any confusion over light and solid glass. I meant light as in line ratings. I was hoping I could find something with a lighter rating. I decided to go with the Batson solid glass rod blanks rated 12-20. That will give the kids something to beat on the gunwales. Re: Light Solid glass blanks?

Ken,
I have built many rods on that very blank. I use them all winter long to make professional pike and trout rods for the ice fishing season. They are well received and I have had many many repeat customers. These are a virtually unbreakable blank. I build these rods using the Minima spinning guides and they work very well indeed. Take care Roger Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
