I'm using American Tackle CP on some guide wraps. The bottle says the dry time is one hour and I have never had a problem waiting an hour between CP applications. However, I usually let it dry overnight before applying epoxy. Is this necessary? If I wait a couple hours after the last coat of CP will it be safe to apply epoxy?

I think you will get different answers on this one. I wait overnight, but I have done it after about 3 hours with no problems.

Temp and humidity should probably get the most consideration in dry time estimates. I like overnight too, but in a tight schedule have done a few hours wait.

If it helps, I'm in an air conditioned house. approx. 70 degrees and 35% humidity. Also, the wraps are mostly black with a couple slim metallic trim bands. Nothing overly colorful or detailed.

In that case, I wouldn't even hesitate to apply epoxy after 2 hours of CP dry time. What kind of CP is it? Water based I assume?

I use Cason's Crystal Clear most of the time. It should be fine.

Thanks for the help. I'll give it a few hours and see how it turns out. I'm building it for myself so that lessens the risk a bit.

I had a couple of guides with cp dry overnight cause something came up, and today i went back and applied the rest of the guides with cp and waited like 2 hours, after 2 hours they looked the same as the ones that dried over night. Just thought i would put that in the topic, have a good one!

Epoxy applied. So far so good.

I've gotten away with only a couple hours drying time using our CP products but when using Cason Crystal Clear we recommend over night drying time between CP coats and before applying finish.

The majority of issues folks have had with our CP products were the result of NOT allowing enough setting time!

I might as well throw in something. I use one of my wife's old hair driers on low heat if I'm under the gun to get a rod done. After a couple of hours drying time I then use the dryer on the wraps. warms them up and drys them well. I've done this for a lot of years with not problem.

In this case, using American Tackle acrylic CP, 2 1/2 hours dry time, climate controlled environment and VERY thin applications of CP it came out perfectly well. No problems at all.

I should have added that I use the Cason's Crystal Clear water based CP, not the other.

I am in a room with AC humidity is around 35 - 40 % and I wait about 2 hrs and every time I have no problem. Just did a 6'-6" all purple rod for mother's day her a client. I left it on for about 2 hrs and epoxied. looked great.

Just make sure you give it enough time and don't rush it

It would be a shame to have to redo it I have used several CP's and went back to Flex Coat.
Cason's water based does not put any time on the bottle
Flex Coat reads 1 hour depending on temperature

Paint like anything else can look dry even to the touch but its not. I think the same for CP. Just my thought. I'll let it dry overnight for my peace of mind. I have tried the one coat wait 3 hours and another and yes it looks dry. But I have had streaking or some areas soaking in more than others when the epoxy went on so I'm an overnight guy now. I'm not saying it does not work but for me I'll play it safe.

I have always waited one hour with Flex Coat, never had any problem.

You are defining "overnight" as "after dinner" and "after breakfast the next morning", right?
