Hey guys,
I have to deliver a rod on saturday morning... im going to apply the first coat of epoxy tonight. (i know, i happen to like procrastinating) im using 1cc of each hardener and resin of prokote and threadmaster for my guides, and threadmaster for my dec wrap. how long should i wait between coats. Figuring im gonna need 2, maybe 3, but hoping for 2 coats. And should i coat the dec wrap. wait like 4 hours, then coat the guides. that way the dec wrap wont sag or fling all over the place when im applying epoxy with my power wrapper on my guides. i think i answered my own question. lol. Thanks Fellas. Re: Epoxy time help?? please!

Gate,
#1 I wouldn't mix less than 2cc each on something where I were pressed for time = less room for error #2 Why use 2 brands? (I know a few reasons, just wondered why on yours) #3 I'd put everything on at once: guides and wrappings #4 I ALWAYS WAIT overnight before applying another coat of finish 5 You should never have enough finish on anything to sag or "fling" anywhere! 6 2-3 thin coats will give you way better results than 1-2 thicker ones DR Re: Epoxy time help?? please!

Thank you Duane. the flinging thing was just as a precaution while the rod was spinning on the power wrapper.
I the reason i use "2 brands" is because i think threadmaster is a very hard, strong finish, and pro kote is on the softer side. i like both of them, but together, i get the best of both worlds. the flexibility of the prokote with the strength and scratch resistance of threadmaster. and about #1 technically im using 4 ccs over all. thats what ive always done. never had problems. Thank you! Anddd, i will take the time to put 2-3 thin coats, the customer "deserves" it. THANKS! Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 05/04/2011 07:00PM by Gabe Nakash. Re: Epoxy time help?? please!

Welcome Gabe!
I often use a slower finish on long wrappings for many reasons and come back with a faster finish for the top coat. Works VERY well when needed. DR Re: Epoxy time help?? please!

Gabe, you should have plenty of time. Do one coat tonight, one in the am, and one tomorrow night.
I use Diamond II and it dries super fast. I've already recoated in 3 hours if my room temp is 75. I use it on the snake skin wrapped muskie lures that I build. They often require 5-7 coats of finish so quick drying time is a premium for me. I can usually get 3 coats on a lure in a day. jeremy Re: Epoxy time help?? please!

Btw, when I say together, I hope you know that iam mixing thread master and prokote, in the same cup. It's like a promaster thread finish. Lol Re: Epoxy time help?? please!

Why would you gamble with mixing two different epoxies together at the same time? Not very smart if you ask me. Rolly Beenen Rovic Custom Rods Re: Epoxy time help?? please!

Gabe,
I second Rolly on his comment. I wouldn't mix different manufacturers in the same cup even if I had all the time in the world. If things are going to go wrong it's always going to be when your in a hurry, why take the chance. If your trying to experiment that's fine just don't take the chance when your cut for time. i mix prokote and threadmaster together, i know a lot of people on this site that do this for a living, and they use it and have NEVER had a problem.
There is nothing to gamble for me, as it turns out perfect. if you try it you will see that you get the best of both worlds. one cc precisely of each part a and part b together. Thanks Gabe Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 05/06/2011 03:52PM by Gabe Nakash. Re: Epoxy time help?? please!

I mix finishes ALL the time, been doing so since BEFORE Threadmaster was available and I tested it for Andy. With Aftcote and with Pro Kote. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
