A,B, C, or D thread give the strongest wrap???

I realize that there is a thread diameter difference between the various sizes of rod wrapping thread.

But, from a simple common sense view, one can get more wraps per given length of guide foot for a thinner thread than for a thicker thread.

So, if you put aside convention, and just do actual testing, which thread, or combinations of thread gives the strongest wrap on a guide foot that is 1/2 inch in length.

I suppose that one could figure this out in mathematical terms.

This should be a simple algebra problem.

You can measure the breaking strength of each thread thickness.

Then, you can measure the thickness of each thread thickness.

From the measure of the thread thickness, you can take 1/2 inch and divide it by the thread thickness of each type. This should give you the total number of wraps in 1/2 inch.

Then, multiply the breaking strength of each thread type, by the number of turns of thread for each thread thickness to come up with the total force required to break a wrap.

------------------------
Having calculated that number, you then have to consider what happens if the guide begins to loosen and twist and began to cut a thread. If it takes longer to cut through a size D thread, than a size A thread, and if all of the wraps would come loose if one were cut, would that allow the rest of the wraps to come loose? I think not, but that could be part of the calculations.

-----------------------
Or, you could forget about the calculations, say that D sized thread is thicker and stronger than A thread and let it go at that - but is that really the answer??

Has any one ever gone through these calculations before, and if so, what were your numbers for breaking strength as well as thickness of each thread type?

Thanks for your thoughts.

Roger

I'm still focused on the data regarding why you feel a "large" tip top is more durable than a micro top and what test results you have that prove that opinion.

Maybe solve one thing before we move on to the next?

Really doesn't matter Because the epoxy is going to go through the threads and that is what holds it more. Your method is great though. Size a is great for trim pieces and D for the wraps. Epoxy , epoxy it and the strength is more then enough.

Thread holds the guides, epoxy simply encapsulates the thread as a protectant. Although a small amount of strength is added with epoxy penetration, it doesn't offer as much as you think.

Couldn't agree more with Jim.

I remember that clemens stated in "advanced" that a nylon wrapped single is more than enough to hold on even the toughest roller guide. the way he said it it was underwritten that "A" thread was the "weakest" of possibilities. I dont recall the charts and test data that he usually provided when illustrating the validity of a concept, but if anyone had "ran the numbers", Im sure it was him.
