I don't see why it would be necessary, but do any of you do so. what do you think it gives as an advantage. Id assume that if you epoxy'd over the underwrap then the guide would be raised off the blank.
Just curious. Gabe Re: underwraps on micros?

Your addidng a bunch of weight, which is one of the main reasons to use the micros.
For higher ring height, check out the different brands/frame styles. Re: underwraps on micros?

I dont want put underwraps. was just curious about what it does. if any pros/cons. i dont want added ring height. my assumption was that it would do so, and be harder to wrap. Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 04/23/2011 02:43PM by Gabe Nakash. Re: underwraps on micros?

Putting underwraps with micros would be anti-produstive. I use micros with the shortest wrap that I can get away with on a particular blank. They are very easy to wrap and finish. My favorite micro thread, FishHawk Silver Sparkle, very easy to apply finish over and looks fantastic!. Re: underwraps on micros?

Gabe,
In spite of trhe other comments, I really wonder if even a sensitive scale could pick up the weight difference on a rod by putting underwraps under the guides. Even if you could weigh the tiny bit of difference in weight by the addition of an underwrap on a micro, one might like to use this method to do a quick trim wrap without the hassle of starting and stopping wraps on small sections of the rod. I wonder if someone has accurate weight scale data on the weight gain of a rod, done with either no underwraps or with underwraps. I know that the weight of 10 feet of thread is tough to measure. I can't imagine that one would put more than this on a rod when wrapping a set of guides. I am assuming that when you do the underwrap, you then put the micro on top of the thread and wrap it without applying finish first to the underwrap. If you apply finish to the underwrap before wrapping the main guide, I could then believe that you might have a measurable amount of weight. Take care Roger Re: underwraps on micros?

The finish would soak into all the thread, including the under wrap, regardless if you put on finish on the under wrap before or after applying the guide. The main weight would be from the extra finish. Re: underwraps on micros?

Joel,
I agree. I also believe that the amount of extra finish due to one layer of thead on the short wraps would be minimal indeed. Roger Re: underwraps on micros?

Maybe it isn't just weight. Lets say it is a given that we would place a guide where the blank would naturaly want to bend. Is it possible that the improvements we notice by foregoing underwraps, using smaller guides, and shorter guide wraps are more a function of not constraining the natural bend of the blank? I put a under wrap on mine,I wanted to have some tread slightly past the guide like 1mm its fine for me if you can notice the difference between underwrap and no underwrap you probably can see through walls lift cars and fly.I did micro spiraled on a inshore lite rod works great jigged stripers the other day,the rod is perfect .Build however the rod suites you, thats what i do and every rod i build is for my fishing style and comfort ,thats the point of custom rods.
