Just curious what others have determined to be there "go to" spinning real seat for bass fishing. Not exclusively a drop shotting rod, just a "general purpose" seat. I've built multiple spinning rods for clients with several different configurations, but i'm not completely sold on anything...

Any feedback would we greatly appreciated.

Am Tack Aero seat is all I use anymore

What I like best is no realseat and use a Tenn handle setup.

When I give my clients the choice of many different reel seats in the last couple of years for bass spinning rods; many of them are picking the American Tackle Aero spinning reel seat.

A very comfortable grip, easy to install and looks nice as well.

If you install the grip with the threads pointing toward the tip, the swell in the reel seat creates a very comfortable filler ball in the palm of the hand that makes for effortless fatigue free fishing all day long.

You can customize the grip if you want to by covering the threads with one of the older style elongate reel seat nuts which extend from the reel seat nut back over the threads.

A 2nd choice - which is also very comfortable is to use a sleleton reel seat with a cork or hardwood filler between the back and front portions of the reel seat.

The choice that is at the bottom of the list for client selection is the type reel seat that leaves the blank bare between the front and back portion of the reel seat. A tiny amount of weight is saved with this design, but most clients find that this style reel seat is uncomfortable to fish for long days on the water. But a tiny amount of fishermen prefer the ability to feel the larger amount of bare blank between the front and back of the reel seat, even at the expense of hand comfort and increased hand fatigue.

For me, it's still too small. They need to come out with a 17 or 18mm. Nice design though.

I agree with your statement about the need for both a 17 and an 18 reel seat.
I have spoken with American Tackle and they indicated that they are working on new designs, so hopefully we will see something soon.

My go to is a graphite Tennessee handle with the reel wrapped on like a guide. There is nothing more comfortable. If I have to use a seat, I like an 18mm seat, as it gives a similar OD to the Tennessee handles I use. The Aero is still up on my list of things to try.

Jim, out of curiosity, why the 18 size instead of 16? I've built several of these but only in the 16. This seat with the threads up and a half wells grip for the remainder is really comfortable, but again I'm not completely sold on it.

I have small hands therefore I am happy with Fuji IPS, VSS and DPSM spinning reel seats in 16mm or 17mm, in that particular order. I still haven't tried the Aero Seat but it definitely looks cool though.

Aero is OK as it comes but I agree it should have bigger sizes too.
The fuji IPSM if you are willing to add cork to the quicklock foregrip then turn it around to make it an uplocking seat can give more in the hand. For folks with serious RA in the hands, that is the one they chose from me after playing with one, but the standard stuff it comes with is just too thin.

Ergonomics ... it fits my hand better. I use #18 even on bluegill rods, #20 on heavy inshore. I build them uplocking, I enjoy the taper above the reel and no threads.

Split carbon fiber Tennessee is the only way to go. [www.rodbuilding.org] super light and super comfortable. Weigh a spinning reel seat and compare it to the rest of the components for the rod and you will be shocked at how much weight it contributes.

In addition to Jim's comments. I have small hands too, but small spinning reel seats do not get along with me. On bluegill/crappie rods, where I never have to drive a hook through plastic, they are okay. When I set the hook using a bass rod (or heavier application); I will get a sharp pain that shoots up my forearm, quite possibly due to the way I hold the rod and/or set the hook. I never was able to figure out the source of the problem, as it has to be in my mechanics somewhere. Now that I have a few with handles that fill the hand, those sharp pains are gone, and I can take advantage of my spinning rods when the need arises.

I'm sorry, but do the bass care what seat you use? (wink) Just use what is most comfortable for the user.

Do you ever have problems with the reel slipping or moving with that handle? I've built some ice rods with the Tennessee style handle, but not full length rods.
