Just wondering if you guys might share some of your favorite techniques or preferences?

I think RodMaker Volume 6 #1 had a ton of ideas in that regard. All sorts of things included woven marks, hidden lines, feathers, etc. If you have that issue, go through it again and see if it helps generate any ideas for you.

I use an embossing stylus to make my alignment dots. Here are the steps I take:

1. I apply the first thin coat of epoxy and allow it to cure, making a smooth base for the dot.
2. Assemble the rod making sure it is aligned, then place it on rod supports, guide side down.
3. Pour some of the ink or paint onto a paper plate or some foil.
4. Press the ball of the stylus into the puddle of fluid, then place it carefully on one side of the ferrule, perfectly aligned with the center of the blank.
5. Clean off and re-ink the stylus and move to the opposite side of the ferrule, placing the dot in the center of the blank and in alignment with the other dot. Take care to make the dots the same size.
6. Repeat on all ferrules.
7. Allow to dry and then apply another coat of epoxy over the dots.

Just get a sharpie metallic pen in gold silver or white and make 2 dots. No steps required.

Most commonly, I use a technical drafting pen and with a ruler draw a straight line about 1/4" long on each piece.

I can't find Vol 6 #1, and I've heard the embossing stylus makes perfect dots...but i think I'm steady-handed enough to try Kevin's method.
I really like stuff easy.

Head of a straight pin dipped in paint works well.
