Cork with opposite grain

A friend gave me a bag of cork bottle tops from chemicals used at his work.
Right away I noticed the grain was opposite that of regular cork rings. The "holes" face outward. So I glued a few of the 11/2" long tops together and turned them on my lathe. Once finished the grip had kind of a unique look with the holes on the outside vs. top / bottom. It didn't require as muck filler as you might expect. Has anyone tried something like these before? Would I have to worry about water aborbing into the cork with the open grain facing this way? Should I seal the cork? Normally I do not seal. Just looking for your comments, thanks. Post a picture, it would help. I would definitely seal it though with tru-oil or u40 cork seal, something. David Dosser Coshocton, OH Re: Cork with opposite grain

Many older cork grips were make with rings punched in that direction.
It makes no difference in regards to the cork absorbing water. ............ Re: Cork with opposite grain

Cork will not absorb water or any fluid as it is a closed cell structure and it has no grain as there are no fibers. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
