Hi,
I was wondering if you could use a general 2 part epoxy to affix the reel seat to the blank instead of using products like U40 Rod Bond or other brands like it. My Rod Bond is getting a bit old and crusty and I don't have a local supplier that I can buy it from. Any suggestions for products that work just as good? Thanks Mike Molenda Re: Epoxy

Mike
I hane used 24 hr epoxy for a number of years without any problems . I know some of the rods are still holding up after about 10 years . As I have used the 24 hr epoxy I have no idea how the 5 or 10 min concoctions hold up Regards Baz Re: Epoxy

Yes. Devcon slow cure 2-ton epoxy has been a staple for many builders for years. It'll work fine.
However, there are some ease-of-use advantages to products such as RodBond, Pro-Bond, Ultimate Gel, etc. .............. Re: Epoxy

Rod Bond can be heat for a seconds in the micro. Just heat each jar separately. I have a couple of old jars at least 5 yrs old. These jars are crusty. 15 seconds in the Micro and they are ready to mix Good Wraps Bob Re: Epoxy

If you like you can use any type glue that you want. Over the years, virtually every type and style of glue that you can imagine have been used, at one time or another to glue fishing rods together. Some of the glues worked out well, and some were a disaster.
Certainly nothing wrong with using standard hardware type glue - whether it is wood glue, white glue, poly glue, 5 minute epoxy, 10 minute epoxy, 30 minute epoxy, 24 hour epoxy, or 24 day epoxy. Some of these glues will work just fine, and some will not be the best thing for the use. I typically use 30 minute epoxy for most of my handle lay ups to give me time to glue an entire stack of rings and reel seat parts up in a single glue up. I dislike mixing separate batches and having to worry about cured and uncured joints. I also know lots of fellows who use 5 minute epoxy for everything. They work in smaller batches. For example, the rear handle, the reel seat, and the front handle all mixed with separate glue batches. Any time that I am gluing up a single component like a butt cap, or a butt cap plug, or a heavy duty rod tip - I will always use 5 minute epoxy. So, use the product that makes the best sense to you. If you want to be adventerous, you can try out a glue that is not often used, and report back on your results with the type and style glue that you are using for your projects. Roger Re: Epoxy

JP -
Shoe Goo!!!??? I knew you were innovative, but using shoe products on a fishing rod??? Next thing I know you'll be explaining to us the difference in advantages of briefs vs boxers for the butt wrap... Just kidding, you're carbon fiber handles had me thinking on my drive back to Memphis. My son loves the neon colors. Great to see you at the Expo this year. Todd Re: Epoxy

I just picked up and tried some of the Loctite Gel Epoxy (6 minute) and it works very well for this application, you just need to be prepared and work fast. Walt Natzke Ripon, CA Re: Epoxy
