I'm at a Perma-Loss... "help"

I have 2 penn Senator boat rods that need new guides. The rods are in great shape and look pretty new. My problem is: I started to remove the guides in the normal way, razor/utility knife. It was like trying to carve concrete with a butter knife. I know it must be permagloss or something similar. Also tried heating before trying to remove the guides, all I did was break a heavy duty utility knife...
Thanks, Jeff P.S. I'm waiting to hear back from the city council about a permit to BLAST in the city limits.......... :P "I'm thinking 1/2 stick per guide" Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 03/01/2011 09:34PM by Tom Kirkman. Re: I'm at a Perma-Loss... "help"

It's not PermaGloss - it's a UV cured coating that continues to get harder and harder each time you put it in the sun. That's the only drawback to those type finishes.
Eventually they harden to the point they start to crack and chip. When you try to get them off they break and shatter into tiny pieces. I wish I knew a simple way to remove it, but I don't. Sorry. .................. Re: I'm at a Perma-Loss... "help"

I found the Easiest way is to strip them down to the blank and just re-create the wrap. much faster then trying to save the underwraps . Use a heatgun to make it faster and easier Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 03/01/2011 09:59PM by Barry Thomas Sr. Re: I'm at a Perma-Loss... "help"

I am no expert and this may not work. But you might try adding more new finish onto those guides and while wet hitting with a torch. My thought is that more new finish may penetrate the old finish when combined with heat
or if you can somehow get to the outside edge of one of the trim bands perhaps you can cut the thread and peel it off Re: I'm at a Perma-Loss... "help"

If its like the Penn trolling rod I just redid for a customer, it was a total nitemare. The entire rod was sealed, not just the guides. I finally ended up totally stripping the whole rod, and since it was a trolling blank with just short areas between the guides, I completely resealed the complete rod and had some graphics between the first two rollers, so did not come out bad at all.
I wanted to put a name on it and client said ok, but I refrained myself. Today iT is known solely as "THE ROD FROM @#$%&" Ron Weber Re: I'm at a Perma-Loss... "help"

GREAT... glad you guys are full of good news....lol. I think Tom must be right about what it is, I've never ran into anything like it. Ron, it must be the same type rod, maybe different guide configurations though. Roller guide on the butt and tip with 4 BLG ATC guides between. Had a feeling I wasn't going to enjoy this job.
I'll check back later, maybe someone will know something. Jeff.. There is no saving the underwrap, as I usually can do, the coating has penetrated the underwrap and seems to be an "all or nothing" removal.... :( Re: I'm at a Perma-Loss... "help"

I have done it with a dremmel tool to get the guide out then the stuff chips off fairly easy once the guide is removed. Re: I'm at a Perma-Loss... "help"

Welcome to the world of Penn. What I have done in the past it to heat the wrap with my handy Butane torch, nick a section of thread and unravel, You have to soften the finish or it will chip. What you well also find is you well have to re-prep. the guides. I do not like there guides the frames are soldered and the ring will break away Good Wraps Bob Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
