I know a lot of folks use steelhead blanks for crappie jigging but has anybody used a spey blank? Pluses and minuses for both? 11' set up with a fly reel, jigging 1/32 -1/16 oz jigs in the bushes. I've already warned the guy about breaking the tip dislodging stuck jigs.
Thanks Re: Spey Blank For Crappie/Sac-a-lait?

i would think a spey blank would be great for that application. one thing to consider is that most of the manufacturers will not warranty a fly blank if not used for that application. if you use a spey blank for that build let me know how it turns out. i know those crappie guys are prone to stick the tip down into the brush to remove a jig that cost a few cents instead of considering the cost of replacing a tip Re: Spey Blank For Crappie/Sac-a-lait?

As many times as these guys break tips, I'm not gonna warranty it either. At least not tip breaks. He uses his tip to free jigs and knows they break. Looking at Batson's 11'6" 6-7 RX6 spey blank. There is a big difference between a single hand 6-7 and a spey/two handed 6-7! So I'm thinking it would be just about right. Re: Spey Blank For Crappie/Sac-a-lait?

Lane,
The spey rod would definitely work but with that level of abuse, would a solid glass tip blank ala "ugly stick" minimize the breakage possibilities ?? I'm thinking a 7'-8' medium e-glass or IM6 with a large tip ferruled to an ice rod blank. Maybe, just another "dumb" idea. No I it's a good idea. If there it an 11' light powered blank out there with a solid glass tip I can't find it. Re: Spey Blank For Crappie/Sac-a-lait?

Lane, try looking at some of the crappie fishing spots. there are some blanks used specifically for your application. i think there are even some semi-custom/production rods for crappie fishing. maybe you can find out what blanks they are using if noone on the left can help. it is used similar to a cane pole with little movement for the jig. once they find the correct depth of the fish they try to keep the jig in that zone.
