HELP, text decals

im doing some rods for a tournament guy, but he is a college tour bass guy so he is on bit of a budget, and we worked it out, but he wants his names on his rods, is there a cheaper way of getting decals than mudhole. i only need two exactly the same and i don't want to pay 8 bucks each. I would go through merrick but i think they have a minimum order for that stuff.

thanks
-peter

I use 3M clear self adhesive printer labels. They are like heavy duty Scotch Transparent tape.
I have had excellent results. They stick well and do not yellow. I put them directly on the blank. Coat with epoxy just as guide wraps and they last as long as the epoxy. Do not use CP on the label or you will get a crackel effect. Remember, most printer ink is water soluble.
Sorry, this doesn't work so well on dark color blanks.

Joe, can't you use a white or yellow fount for a dark blank. Or is this something you can't print using like my HP inkjet printer

Yellow works as text, but if you use any graphics they tend to be very pale. I have my logo on these labels and look great on light color blanks. On black or brown it's barely visible.

Use the clear decal media and set your back ground color to black. Set your text color to white. Remember that when a printer prints white it simply doesnt put any ink down so that the white paper shows through. Since we are using clear decal media what you get is clear letters. Cut the decal to size carefully as not to smudge anything. I use waterslide decal media so I then coat the printed decal with krylon crystal clear and let dry. (If using peel and stick decal media you may be able to skip this step) Now wrap silver metalic or gold metalic thread on the blank where you want the decal. Put down a coat of color preserver and let it fully dry. then apply your decal over the thread and what you will have is a black decal with the color of your metallic thread showing through as the text. Put some trim wraps on each end of the decal and coat with epoxy.

What type and where are you purchasing the clear decal media?

I purchased the waterslide decal medai from @#$%&. I have gotten both the inkjet and lazer printer waterslide media from them. I believe they also offer peel and stick. I think mudhole carries it also. not positive If you have a good hobby store in your area, they may have it. I think model builders use the stuff also.

Peter,
If he wants his names on the rods, just letter them on with pen and ink, or pen and paint.

My wife, who is an artist does all of my lettering using Testors metallic model paint, and a fine tipped quill pen.

For example:
The metallic colors like gold, bronze, silver seem to flow better through the pen than some of the other colors.

If you can't letter, I am sure you have a friend who can.

Good luck
Roger
