How I do it

I finally got around to taking some pictures of the bands I use for holding little guides. Guys - this is really fast and simple, and worth the effort to purchase some.

You can thank me later!

I asked my dentist about them and he gave me some samples. Then they ordered them for me. You can also get them online - probably cheaper! For me the cost is worth it. I was very frustrated with tape, cable ties, etc.

Mudhole has it. Listed as guide tubing.

I once gave up fishing. It was the most terrifying weekend of my life.

The smallest MH guide tubing is at least twice the size of these. I also have ten feet of the smallest latex you can buy (Reef SCUBA) and it is sloppy compared to these. These stretch comfortably to about 1/4" or 5/16". I usually end up uses one or two latex tube bands on the lower end of the rod, and the rest are the dental bands. You can wrap right up the foot of micros and not worry about the guide sliding. You can't say that with latex tubing, at least not in my experience.

there is "small" surgical tubing out there. I have some that I cut into rings that is about 1/16" ID.

Clockwise, starting on the left: MH latex tubing (which does not appear to be latex to me), smallest latex from Reef SCUBA, .12"OD ligature tie. [www.rodbuilding.org]

Trust me, these dental bands are small. They are also stronger than latex tubing, so they hold the guide tighter.

I've never used these on a rod but I have messed around with them. Chuck is right. Comparing these to latex tubing is like comparing a cow to a horse. Four legs, eat grass, get ridden buy people but not quite the same. The technical name of them is dental or orthodontic ligatures. They hold the wire on to the braces glued on the teeth.

You can do an internet search to find the bands in all sizes down to very very small.
You can also get them off of the big @#$%& site.

I think the guys at Swampland should stock these and leave the cable ties for wiring projects. What do you think, Bill?

pretty cheap if you look through all the listings, some are sold as non dental and tend to be less expensive
