Reversed positioned guide on jig rods

I've notice many of the heavy duty jigging rods being built with the stripper guide in the opposite position to the remaining guides. Please excuse my naivety, but what's the idea behind this?

Its called spiral wrapped, or acid wrapped. The advantage i believe is that there is a noticeable difference in torque and the pressure you feel.
I personally have started to do all my rods like this.
Its not just wrapped on there on the other side. there is a guide on the blank that transitions the line to the underside.
Its actually quite interesting.
try this :

OP, do you mean the stripper guide is turned 180 degrees so the side usually facing the butt is now facing the tip, 2 legs facing tip, not on the underside of the blank? If so, the purpose of this positioning is less legs for line to get caught up on when casting.

Thanks for your responses. The question was in regards to the stripper guide being at 180 degrees to the rest of the guides. Thanks for clarifying.

Its not called spiral wrapped. Its simply the reversed first guide. In jigging, the line can have the ability to touchthe frame of the first guide coming from the reel. When the guide is reversed, that possibility is removed. If you are building a jigging rod, look at the width of the reel and when the line is to the extreme right or left, if it comes close to the frame, then reverse it. If you are unsure, reverse it.

Any questions, feel free to email me.

Hmm,

Actually this is a great question I was about to ask my self ! After many years of fishing on the Columbia for Salmon, I have seen this concept on a few rods in other folks boats while anchored next to them. I really never got a straight answer on the subject...in fact I got several that really didn't make to much sense. I then just dropped the conversation. Now I seen a video recently on a fella who had demonstrated the concept of this build with the rod, he flipped the rod over and used it in a jigging fashion. Unfortunately the video ended for some reason so I never got the hole side of this story.

Kevin has seemed to answered this to some fashion....Sorry for not emailing you with this one....but I really think this should be address openly so the question if arises again can be searched and answered easily. I really think this should be clarified as to what the science and principals are behind this concept. Its baffled me for years even before I started the craft. Any takers on this one ?

In some cases there is a valid reason, in many other cases, the builder simply did it because he thought it would be novel or had seen it elsewhere. If a builder does this and can't give you a simple explanation for why he did it - he doesn't know.

I think Fuji started it. Try it both ways and see if there is any difference.

Actually, Aetna Manufacturing Company started it due to the design of their Foulproof guides. See the last page of the new issue of RodMaker. They started this technique, for a valid reason, in 1951.

On some trolling rods, Planer Rods, in particular, the first guide is reversed for the reason that I stated above. When the rod is in the holder and a planer is attached to the line, the rod actually looks like a stick of dynamite that is lacking a match. Add a match and you have an explosion. So, with the planer taking the line down 30 ft or so, the planer tracks to the left and the right by about 15'. With the line at the extreme left of a 80 wide reel, coupled with the tracking of the line to the left, couped with the 1/16" play in the gimbal that will turn the rod slightly, the ability for the line to touch the guide frame is a reality. If that frame has even the slightest imperfection or knick, BOOM!!!!!!!!! The line will explode. Using braid in this application is a must and that braid will cut into the frame easily also causing the explosion.

I might have time to build one and bring it to the show if you will be there.

The vertical jigging rods bend all the way into the handle most times. When a big Tuna is pulling hard and you are reeling if the line is off to the side of reel and for some reason the fish bends the rod to the right or left the line has the possibility of touching the frame and with the pressure the line is under sometimes that is all the fish needs to snap that line.

Bill -
The Fuji "K" series guides are supposed to shed tangles - but I don't think they come in frames that would stand up to what Kevin and Fred describe.
