I am looking out to all and anyone willing to help me. I have someone looking to have me build them a Noodle/spinning rod that he uses for trolling, He is using a Fenwick HXXS90L-25 rod 1/16-3/8 lure and 2-8lbs line he is using lead core line on it. My question to all of you is what guides do I use for the one he has now has 9 guides on it. the first guide is a spiining guide it is located on the butt section of the rod and the rest look like fly guides and they are located on the tip section of the rod. he would also like to have a bit more backbone to the tip section so I was thinking of using the St Croix blank for this rod. I could really use your help on this one.
Thank you, Jeff H Re: Noodle/spinning/ troling guides????

Why would he be using Lead core on a Noodle rod? Maybe a diver button, downrigger or drop weight, but lead core is like over kill. I know this is not much help, but lead core will defeat the purpose of the noodle rod.. Re: Noodle/spinning/ troling guides????

Just use spinning rod guides and utilze the New Concept System layout. Also, a true noodle rod as I'm sure you know, has little to no back bone anywhere in the blank and are typically longer than 9 foot; of course that is not cast into stone. (Except in the Great Lakes area. :) ) Re: Noodle/spinning/ troling guides????

Jeff,
Just go with a good crank bait rod, and it will work very well for use as a lead core trolling rod. This rod would be a good candidate for a spiral wrap as well. In this case, It is really more important to tailor the rod to the line, than to the weight of the lure. The weight of the line is what the rod is going to have to work with. The weight of the lure is just incidental. Most folks would be using a medium power moderate action for such a rod. I assume that the lead core will be 12 - 30 lb line. I also imagine that the user will be running a large round reel to carry the length and weight of the lead core. I have a couple of glass moderate action rods, that I use for such a rod, and they work very well. The softer action of the glass blank works very well with the lead core. Just check out some of the catalogs for blanks that list lead core as one of their primary uses. You can also check out some of the rod suppliers for thier standard "lead core" rods as well for other ideas. Good luck Roger Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
