old guide wraps

I have an older rod and the guide wrap epoxy has yellowed and is chipping. How do I remove the epoxy? I do not want to remove the guides, they are in good shape. The wraps look in goo shape.

removing the "guide wrap epoxy" (i think thread finish is a more accurate term) will remove the thread. removing the thread will allow the guides to pop off. but, well, i've been wrong before :-)

As the epoxy should have penetrated (at least to some extent) the thread, I don't believe you can remove only the epoxy. Sounds like a guide rewrap is in order.

John,
This might be a good time to simply update the rod. Strip the guides, tie on new guides of a more modern design and go enjoy the rod.

Good luck
Roger

I tried it and since the epoxy has penetrated, it will pull the thread off.
