Fast tapers, long binds, cracked finish

Just wondering whether anyone has any advice or experience with the epoxy cracking near the guide feet when the rod is loaded for the first time after a build. This has generally only a problem with me with long bindings on x-fast tapered blanks – particularly rollered stand up tuna rods. I’m aware that too high a temperature during curing can over harden the epoxy leading to cracks, however, most of my curing occurs in the low 20 degree Celsius range and I still find myself having these problems. Has anyone else had these problems and if so, are there any solutions for overcoming this?

Incorrect guide feet prep can cause this cracking problem right at the toe of the foot.

It's quite common. About the only thing you can do is put the longest, shallowest taper on the ends of the guide feet possible. This will help the ends of the guide feet flex a little easier.

The fact is, guides lag behind rod building technology by some 50 years. Guides don't flex well and won't, until their materials and designs are brought into the 21st century. In fact, I'd like to see them update to the latter 20th century. Even that would be a plus.

Tom:
As usual you are right on target, I think many rod builders have this problem, I know I have this happen from time to time.

I have heard about graphite frames in the guides.
I think that want take to much time until the 20th century arrive like Tom say.
