Hello All,
I happen to pour my own Senko-type stick baits, and I'd like to build/have built a rod for flipping And pitching these unweighted. I know I'll have a bunch of questions, but my first is regarding the inital "Tamer" "stripper" guide. I plan on transitoning to micros, but the first couple of guides I could use advice on. One of the knocks on using spinning for flipping is that the line gets caught in the handle. I've read on this forum that the inital bumper guide is offset in spiral wraps, could the "tamer" guide be offset similarly to prevent the catching on a spinning handle? Also, wouldn't this be a good application for a titanium guide? (single, and less breaking prone?) I'm sure I'll have lots more questions! Thanks! Craig Re: Spinning Flipping Pitching Question

You could most definitely offset the stripper guide, even since you are not casting use a small guide.
But I doubt that in either case it would fix the challenge of using a spinning rod to flip with. The hanging up is not being casued by the guides, but rather by pulling the line off to the side with the line hand, and that loosened loop catching the handle Probably the best way to lesson or eliminate the challenge would be to switch hands even if it meant switching back after the flip. like those who are not power hand casters do with bait casting flipping sticks. This would amount to pulling the line away from the handle opposed to pulling it into the handle. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 02/13/2011 08:50AM by Steve Gardner. I fish senko's a lot. Took me some time to get the feel, but I really like them! Steve has much more knowledge than me, but I can't help adding my opinion. Please remember the saying about opinions... Anyway, I would urge you to use a casting reel for this technique. I build on a 7' medium or medium light blank and spiral wrap micros. With my reel adjusted properly I can pitch the senko a long, long way. In fact, Steve gave me the information on the rod build at last year's ICRBE. Re: Spinning Flipping Pitching Question

It could work, especailly if you are just flipping. This is what I would do, tape on a set of guides and a tamer guide and go test filp, keep moving and trying different tamer guides until you find something that works. You might have to change the way you flip, but at least you will know before you wrap them.
Let us know if you find a setup you like. Good luck. Stan Re: Spinning Flipping Pitching Question

Thanks Guys,
Well for flipping the reel does not matter, except for the handle perhaps getting in the way. Heck, you can flip with a cane pole and no reel if you really wanted. The way in my trials I had been "getting around" the handle looping in flip/pitch was to grab the line closer to the first guide, rather than by the reel as in "normal" flip/pitch. I was just thinking that perhaps the extra cm or so you might gain by offsetting could make it easier. As for casting, I already flip/pitch with a baitcaster, but there are reasons that a spinning reel is better in some situations, one of which (IMO) is unweighted stickbaits. But heck, even if just to prove it "can't" be done, isn't that in the spirit of "custom"? If I'm just doing the "accepted" flipping stick with concept guides, split grip, that's readily available without resorting to a custom rod. Heck, micros are commercially available now.
