hello all! I just got a 6'6" fly rod 2wt. that i am going to build into a ultra light spinning rod, the problem is that the tip has a bend in it probably like a 20% bend, it is really noticable, sending it back would'nt be worth it , cause it is like a 30 $ rod, so si there any thing I could do to make this not so noticable, I know that I should put the guides on with the bend downwards, I think. I was thinking maybe if have the bend upwards, maybe the weight of the epoxy and the tip and the guides would like bend it back to the right position, maybe a little. any suggestions would help, Thank you. Put the bend up - that's the stiffest axis. The weight of the guides will tend to counteract it and you'll have the rod set up for the quickest speed in that direction.

Hey Tom -
Would that be the same case for a bass casting rod blank? I've had some where I find the spine and the bend is about 90 degrees to the left of the spine, I actually returned one it was so pronounced I didn't think it would be good for my client to site down the rod and it looks like it's bent towards the tip. I wasn't sure if it was a manufacturing thing or a storage thing as I see many people lean their rods (blanks) against the wall. Re: crooked tip?

All rods will have some amount of natural curve or warp. You can use this to build a quicker responding rod. I never bother with rod spine, but instead use the straightest axis in the manner described above. We still can't cast and fish on a single axis, but having the curve in the position I mentioned tends to offset the weight of the guides in that position.

Gents,
One thing to remember is that most Graphite, Boron and carbon fiber rods get defects in manufacturing rather than how they are staored. Graphite tends not to warp when leaned against a wall or stored in horizontal racks where it can bow due to little or no memory in the carbon fabric. if there is a noticeable bend at the tip of the blank it more than likely is due to a less than straight mandrel during the curing/heating phase in manufacturing. Now composite blanks can and will bow if stored with a tight line attached or leaned. Just my two cents. Tight lines, John Re: crooked tip?

Lorenzo,
Bend up, bend down - it is up to you. Just don't make it bend to the side or it looks unsightly to the client when the rod is being used. Good luck Roger Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
