coating for feather onlay?

Hi folks,

Can anyone recommend a finish coating for feather inlays, (on-lay) other than typical 2 part epoxy thread finish. Maybe something thinner. Will spar varnish work? I have been applying an on-lay to the reel seat and only epoxying (flexcoat lite) the feather, not completely around the barrel of the seat, but I'm not satisfied with the results. Can't get the finished look I want. If this topic has been covered before please direct me me to it .

What you have to do is turn the insert a bit smaller to accomadate for the extra thickness of the finish and then go ahead and assemble it after it is really dry.

Tell us the details of what the problems with Flex Coat Lite are. I use only Flex Coat Lite and it works fine. I end up with probably 4 coats on them, and if I'm careful, the finish looks like glass. I agree with Ron on sizing-you have to take it into account. Check this one out and let me know if it exhibits the problems you are having: [www.rodbuilding.org]

I forgot to mention that going to other coatings not designed for UV resistance will most likely result in very ealy discoloration, so you want to be careful what you go to.

The reason I use so many coats is that it takes that many to get a perfectly smooth finish without any shape of the feathers sticking through. I don't think I've ever done one in less than three coats.

It sounds like he was trying to finish it after it was already installed and trying to keep the finish our of the receiving end of the reel seat. First one I ever did, I did that way and the finish filled it up and reel would not go in.

I affix feather with cp fist. Then I want to coat just feather only, not complete circumference of reel seat. Can't get smooth even finish. Leaves dips and depressions in finish.
