Someone wants me to build a spinning rod on a 13' spey 7/8 blank. does anyone know what line would work best and possible lure weight? This will be for distance casting. Re: Spinning Rod on Spey Blank

Line won't matter, really. Due to the fly/spey line ratings being purely subjective, it's hard to peg a lure weight. However, my guess is that you'll need at least 1/2 ounce to easily load that rod.

Ricky,
It really depends on the blank. I just built a 12' #10 on a CTS switch blank. I will hang some weight on it later today and get back to you. I'm not going to cast it though. Herb Ricky, 1/2oz felt O.K. for the tip. Can;t tell re the mid seacion and the butt though w/o casting. 1oz was way too heavy for the tip. Leads me to question how well a spey rod will work. Why not contact CTS - they have spinning (surf) blanks up to 14'. Herb Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 02/05/2011 08:00AM by Herb Ladenheim. Re: Spinning Rod on Spey Blank

Best to ask him "How much weight" are you planning for distance casting. I have a repeat customer who keeps asking about a 13' rod for surf casting competition - but he wants to toss 4oz (or a little more). Re: Spinning Rod on Spey Blank

I think it would come out better if you used a blank already designed for that sort of thing, like a Menpachi (Whipping) blank designed to throw lighter line/lure offerings in Hawaii, etc. www.talongraphite.com in the surf section.
Bunch cheaper priced blank also to many of the spey blanks. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
