I was told on another site that aluminum rod tubes were not allowed as carry on luggage . Yes, the tubes would be in a rod bag. Is this true? Bill Re: Rod tubes for flying.

Nothing would surprise me at this point. Unfortunately, you are not going to get a proper answer from TSA. What works in one airport, is taboo in another. Their response is that they have different rules in different airports as one of their extended security measures. You might want to just ship your fishing gear in advance via FedEx and do the same for the return trip. Re: Rod tubes for flying.

I flew from Ohio to the PNW earlier this year and checked (2) rod tues and hand carried (1) alum tube. No problems. I hopped flights and airlines with no problem. The TSA agent did ask what it was, looked at it and wished me best of luck on the stream. Re: Rod tubes for flying.

The way things are going today you may be better off sending them - as said - to where you are going and then meet them there. --- Never know if they stop you and do not let you on the plain ??? Bill - willierods.com Re: Rod tubes for flying.

Bill -
I fly with aluminum tubes all the time and never had any issues. I even carry them on to the plane, where the TSA can clearly see --- they are aluminum tubes. Once in a while, security personnel will ask me what they are. One time this happened in Mexico City where I pulled out of my arse - "Cana de Pescar" (Kon - ya day Pes - car). Literally translated it means fishing cane or pole. Remember that phrase if you ever travel to Central or South America. Tony Re: Rod tubes for flying.

I fly every year to Alaska and have never had a problem with rods in tubes. Some years it's just a single rod in a 4 piece tube, other years it's a 4 1/2 foot tube with a fly rod tube taped to it. I've never had a problem, though once they did ask me to do a "gate check". I try and only bring 4 piece rods these days and just carry one so I can still fish if the baggage takes a detour. I usually have 3 other 4 piece rods inside my luggage so as not to incur additional baggage fees.

I fly domestically and off shore with tubes all the time. They sometimes ask, other times not. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
