What is the difference?

I have a 6' 2/3 , 2 piece blank. Is there a difference between a fly rod blank and a spinning rod blank? I was wondering if I could build a light weight spinning rod from this blank. Thanks for any help.

Rick,
A rod can be built on any blank tha you like. You can put any style handle or guides on any blank that you want as well.

The conventional difference between the typical fly rod and the typical spinning rod is action. i.e. generally speaking the average fly rod tends to have a much slower action that works well for fighting big fish on light leaders.

Conversely, the average spinning blank tends to have a faster action that works better when one is using a bit heavier line throwing heavier baits as is expected with a spinning rod compared to a fly rod.

and some manufacturers MAY not honor warrantee on the blank, if built into a different type of rod, for one or another reason, ask them.

that blank would make a nice crappy rod. would be a lot of fun. make them feel like big bass.

tape on a seat and guides I would think 4's or even 3's with a 4 lb line or I use a 4lb braid, with a leader, that stuff don't break. Go out and cast it. Depending on how light of a lure you plan to use. 1/8 - 3/16 oz ???

If you want a really great ultra light "panfish" rod make a 7 1/2 foot 3 weight moderate action fly blank into a spinning blank. Will load well with 1/8 oz lures, but will go nicely lighter than that. Design it around a small reel and you will be amazed.

Rick,
For light biting walleye here in the midwest, I build quite a few "rigging rod" using fly rod blanks.
This style fishing is the employment of a fairly light weight - 1/4-1/2 oz - then a long leader - like 12 feet with a single small hook and a live bait impaled on the hook - like a crawler or a leech.

For the times during the mid summer blues, this style fishing which means an almost stationary presentation, you are looking for the slight tick of the light tip of the fly rod tip to signal a bite for the negative fish. There is plenty of length and light tip for the fisherman to realize that he has a fish, without alerting the fish to the presence of the fisherman. Then, line can be fed to the fish to allow the hook to be into the mouth far enough for a good hook set.

As Bill also suggested, many crappie spinning rods are built using a fly rod blank.
