Is it ok to soak eva grips in hot water to make them easier to install?

There is no need to do so. Make yourself a "push board", lubricate with Rod Bond and drive it home. It will slide right down like butter. IF you so desire, you can always ream the grips a bit to get them closer to the proper size. Make sure they stop 6" or so from the actual installation location when checking the reamed grips for fit before installation. They need to be a bit snug once they are pushed into final position.

Hank,
Another thing is to use the blank well coated with epoxy to completly wet down the inside of the EVA, before the EVA starts to get snug on the blank. This extra epoxy the full length of the interior of the handle really helps it slide down the blank.

thanks guys, I'll give it a shot. I really had a tough time with the butt grip, it may have been one size to small but I got it done.

I assume you have read the FAQs instructions on how to mount EVA grips? You can access it with the FAQs link above.

I've used rubber cement with EVA and Hyplon without prolems. It is slightly more flexable than epoxy.

measure well. You want the closest size you can get to where it will sit. I measured several times and looked at a lot of different sizes till I found two that fit the closest. Then it is just follow the instructions on how to slide them on.

The person that taught me to build rods said to soak the grip in water that was boiled for 10 mins to allow it to easier slide down the blank. I did it once and it did make it easier but it was unnecessary. Ream the grip to a close size(make sure all the grit is out of it before you test fit or you will scratch the blank). Make certain to get full coverage of epoxy inside the grip and drive it home. Dont stop until you are at the final position. It seems when you stop it will be a bit tuff to get it moving again.

this stuff shapes very easy. So if you get the right size ID for the blank you can put it on a lath and shape it .
