It seems this blank usually gets built for spinning, but will it work okay for low profile baitcaster? Re: Does HS9000 build a good baitcasting rod?

Yes. In fact, many if not most Hot Shot rods are casting models.

Marty,
What type of fishing to you plan on using the rod for? It is not a particularly powerful blank, but I've used them as finesse rods for bass, all built as casting rods FWIW. It would be finesse bass and light inshore stuff. Is 1/2oz really the upper range of casting weight on a blank that heavy? Re: Does HS9000 build a good baitcasting rod?

Hot Shot blanks are often powerful, but feature very light tips. which limits the casting weight range.

As Tom noted, the tip is VERY light and fast. IMO, it is a blank best used with unweighted baits and small lures. It is a wonderful flats blank for sight casting to reds, bonefish, etc. IMO, the blank works best as a spinning rod due to the lower lure rating ... but it can be built either way. The amount of baitcasting to spinning blanks, like Tom said is at least 10 to 1 toward casting throughout the country. I'd definitely go with a custom rod configuation down south as the factory casting models have a 14 inch rear grip for placing in a drift of jet boat's rod holders. When I used mine down in Florida a 9 or 10 inch rear grip would have been better suited. Re: Does HS9000 build a good baitcasting rod?

Was that 9 or 10 inches on a casting or spinning configuration? Re: Does HS9000 build a good baitcasting rod?

Either, I hope we're talking the Loomis or MHX blank here, the Batson HS 9000 is a whole different, stouter and faster actioned blank.
The 14 inch rear grip gets in the way on the casting version if you cast more often, a 10 inch rear grip I think still works just fine in a rod holder with this light of a blank. The 14 inch grip decreases the effective length and effects casting negatively IMO. The factory version of the spinning rod had a 7 inch grip, if I remember right, which I thought didn't balance in the hand as well as it could have and didn't really improve casting over the longer 9 or even 10 inch grip.
