RX7 ISWB945 Spiral Wrap

I will have one of these swim bait blanks waiting on me when I get home. I am thinking about doing a double foot 8,7,6,6....for the guides. Should I go a little bigger on the guides and stay away from a spiral wrap? Or would it be good to go?

When I build a spiral, it is for a couple specific fishing presentations. I like them for plastics, jigs, vertical presentations. For casting and retrieving, I usually keep the guides on top for the casting rods. JMO

I only build spiral wrapped rods. Until I see any practical disadvantage I'll not return to building them any other way.

Garey,
When I build casting rods for fishermen that use them for either
a. jerk baits, or
b. musky fishing

I always build This style casting rods in a conventional style.

The reason is simple. For both of these types of fishing, the line is often pulled from the top side of the rod. i.e. the tip is put down on a jerk bait and the rod is often used backward compared to conventional fishing.
The same is true for musky fishing when they do their figure 8 with the rod tip in the water.

None of the fishermen that used rods for this style of fishing wanted anything to do with a spiral wrap.

Thanks for the input fellas. This is going to be a personal build and I just thought I would ask the mastas' opinions. I still have a couple of weeks left in Singapore, so I will have plenty of time to decide.

off topic.. but you are in Singapore?

most of the anglers here would find the spiral wrap rods 'wierd', but there are a handful of freelance builders that prefer to build spiral wraps, for reasons that have been said many times over. the in-house rod builders at the tackle shops are pretty resistant to change, simply, i guess, because most of their customers are not used to seeing spirals.

I am in Singapore until the 30th. I work a 28 on/ 28 off rotation over here. Do you know where I can find any rod building shops open after 6 around here?

hmm .. most of the shops selling rod building items here close around 6pm.. you could try to get your stuff on saturdays

what items do you specifically need? the main shops i frequent are Sabre Strokers (NFC distributor) and Angers Outfitters, both at Beach Road. While they do have Fuji guides, the stockist or Fuji is SEA Tackle, near Kallang MRT station. Their price for the guides, however,is slightly higher than that of the other 2 shops. They do not stock micro guides, the smallest i can get is 5.5 LSG.

You could probably get most of the stuff you need from Anglers Outfitters and Sabre, but dont expect too much in terms of the 'bling bling'. The freelance builders bring in Matagi parts themselves... Another shop would be Kaiser Pro Shop. they may have some parts or blanks for rod building, but i think theirs is suited to the jigging/popping crowd..

They are pretty tight on us in the Shipyard and leaving before 6. I am down at Keppel Fels south of Jurong. I visited a shop on Beach one Sunday, and the Shimano shop, I think near Little India or behind the baby blue mosque, but I have not been able to get back to them. I will pull these places up on a map one day. It isn't like I can find anything cheaper over here anyways. I tried to buy a Shimano Scorpion and they want more with a 25% discount than I could get it on @#$%&. Unless you have the right people with you, it is hard to catch a deal.

umm. Sundays, only a few shops are open.. Hong Guan (not sure if they are open, but i think their signboard says they open on sunday) and Joe tackle.. there has been rumours of business ethics issues with Hong Guan, so if you do drop by, I suggest you hold on to your wallet and compare prices

Personally, if you are looking for some of the 'higher end' reels, try Lure Haven (Bussorah Street) or Angler's Outfitters (Bali Lane).. I personally like Angler's outfitter as their price by cash/card is normally quite attractive. Lure Haven is pricing is attractive by cash. How much was the scorpion at the Shimano shop by the way? I just saw one sold recently at Lure Haven..

If you go to the Shimano Shop (I think you are talking about Tan Thong Cheong at King George Ave), their discount is in line with with "standard" 20% of RRP. If distance is not an issue for you, you can try to stop by Changi Village as they are open 7 days a week, even on public holidays. Changi Village Pro Fishing's (they are a shimano authorised dealer/service centre) price is around 24% discount from RRP

I am not sure how much you would pay for a Conquest in US, but I bought my Conquest 50 @ SGD520 and Conquest 100 @ SGD590, for comparison purpose.

Not sure if Tom appreciates us talking about non rodbuilding topics here.. if need be, drop me an email at canonite.sg@gmail.com
