I just stopped in a rod building and fly shop today. they had Gudebrod thread in size D on close out. I bought 6 spools of it. I am going to be making some 10wt Forecast fly rods. I hope D gives me a nice looking wrap. I am new and this will be my first rod. I would have bought A but they did not have any of that left. For the price i thought i would give it a try. Should i use it? Kevin Gross Many men will spend their whole life wondering if they made a difference. Marines dont have that problem - Ronald Regan Re: Did i mess up?

Kevin,
You can use any thread that you like to build a rod. The finer the diameter of the thread, the finer look will be the thread wraps. Virtually all of the high quality fly rods use A size thread, but if you want to use D thread, it will certainly hold the guides on the blank. Roger Re: Did i mess up?

Not at all. How could you already?
D' will do just fine for your first rod. Its way easier to work with. A' can sometimes be very fustrating, but it does look pretty slick. good luck Re: Did i mess up?

Next time you need thread in a small diameter try a craft or sewing store. But remember these threads have a silicon coating so you well have to use CP. D will work just fine, except you will have a bulker wrap. Depending on the Rod weight. I like 00 silk thread Good Wraps Bob Re: Did i mess up?

All of the above are correct, I think it is best to use ''D'' on first couple of builds and then go to ''A'' after you have a little practice, then compare the two. Some people do not like to see the thread on the wraps however it doesn`t bother me. On a good fly rod I would rather see ''A''. on casting rods it doesn`t bother me as much.
Like Bob said, If you go to a craft store for thread be sure to use CP. Actually I would apply two light coats. Bill Ohio Rod Builders Canton, Ohio Re: Did i mess up?

No - you did not mess up. Later on, when you feel comfortable with size A - and if you ever decide to get into "thread art" fancy wraps you'll likely find that a size D thread can give a wrap an interesting texture over all size A. For example a single black size D thread on the outside of an intricate wrap can serve to accentuate the end of a design - or be the center of a cross wrap. Re: Did i mess up?

heck you did good. Always buy on a sale. And in larger quantities. better savings. Now when one of your friends with a salt rod to do you will have the thread for it. Bill - willierods.com Re: Did i mess up?

Gudebrod for .99 a spool so i thought i would give it a try. I thought being it was Gudebrod i should give it a try. Kevin Gross Many men will spend their whole life wondering if they made a difference. Marines dont have that problem - Ronald Regan Re: Did i mess up?

Just like everyone else is saying, I don't see a mistake with your choice. A 10 weight rod, I'd be tempted to use the same diameter. Have fun it's your first. Re: Did i mess up?

Bill is correct when He says to use 2 light coats on sewing thread. Look at Mederia an silky threads. Stay away from cottons ad Rayons they fuzz Good Wraps Bob Re: Did i mess up?
