Just wondering Re: To glue or not to glue what do u do?

Most (if any) epoxy formulators do not recommend thinning their products with a solvent. It can and often does change some of the characteristics of the finish over the long haul.
On heavier rods there is nothing wrong with making the underwrap, applying a coat of finish, then overwrapping and finishing that. Lots of guys do it that way. ......................... Re: To glue or not to glue what do u do?

Mitchell,
I am glad that you are getting good results - thinning your finish. But, actually you would be better off to buy a finish that is thinnner from the get go. Epoxy finishes cure by a chemical reaction, not a solvent evaporation, as is the case for other single part glues. When you mix a solvent into an expoxy finish, you are relying on the possibility that the solvent will all evaporate, before the chemical reaction kicks and traps the solvent in the finish. If the finish is very thin and slow drying, you have a possibility that you can get all of the solvent out of the finish before the epoxy "kicks". Just try a thinner finish and see what happens. First question I would ask is Why do you thin your finidh?? Mike (Southgate, MI) If I don't want to, I don't have to and nobody can make me (except my wife) cuz I'm RETIRED!! Re: To glue or not to glue what do u do?

In your opinions, what do you guys think is the thinnest possible finish currently marketed? Re: To glue or not to glue what do u do?

I have used tm light a fair bit and warmed it b for use i like it a lot but find that a high build epoxy thinned bd classic coat I'm playing with at the mo dry's quicker flow's better and I get a much more level finish I am gong to persevere with the light build epoxy's may b I need to change my technique or use a stiffer brush
As for glueing the underbind then the overbind I find that it looks a lot tidyer that when u glue the whole lot Re: To glue or not to glue what do u do?

Do you find that if you finish your underwraps that when you do the overwraps it makes it easier to do around the inside of the guides?
Does doing this change the action of the rod? Re: To glue or not to glue what do u do?

Unless you are doing - heavy - salt water rods IMHO there is no need for under wraps. prep the guides - well - If you do coat with permagloss or LumiSeal . Faster drying and a harder surface to wrap onto.
I thin my finish with mid -temp - lacquer thinner . have never had any problems in many years Bill - willierods.com Re: To glue or not to glue what do u do?

If it works for you and you really like the results which sounds like the case, why do you even care what we think? You won't find much support around here for doing things outside the norm, but I say more power to you. Back in the old days, I don't remember ever using finish without putting a little naphtha in it and I'll still occasionally thin my finish for some special needs.
Also, add some punctuation to your posts. I stopped ready after you first line as I'm sure many others did because I couldn't follow. Best, TC Thomas Cayman - AKA Robert Russell ROBERT M.
