St Croix SCIV blanks

Hello everyone,

Its been a couple years since I built myself a new rod. I have enjoyed success with St Croix blanks and was interested in a SCIV blank for a 9 foot, 5 wt 4 piece fly rod. I dont see the SCIV product I am familar with as a blank , although it still appears in the form of the finished rod (Legend Ultra series). The nearest equivalent is apparently the blank the Imperial line is built on, part SCIV and part SCII. I gather this blank has the "softer" type graphite towrds the tip. A nice feature in what is going to be a trout rod, I suppose. Can anyone help me better understand this choice and how it influences the characteristics of the blank?

Thanks for helping me out!

J.C. Smith

James,
Use one or more sponsors on the left. I just looked at the Angler's Workshop web site and they have a list of St. Croix 4 piece Fly rod blanks and among them is a 9 foot 5 weight. You could try other sponsors as well. Have Fun.

Hey JC,

I just shipped out a finished rod using the SCIV/II blank, and dang... it was one of the sweetest casting rods I have had to part with in a long time. I built it in the 8wt, 4pc model though. It was a pretty fast action, with a quick learning curve though. I think the higher modulus graphite is in the top section, which the lower mod is in the lower half... but I could be wrong. It casts as well as blanks costing twice as much. The butt diameter is very good, and the weight is great too. You will not be dissapointed. Just to let you know though... it is a fast rod. Maybe not as fast as their SCV, but pretty fast. So, just keep that in mind. Also, if the aesthetics interest you; it is a beautiful burgundy finish, which provides a good choice of color combos that really bring it out. I went with Mudhole's new ProWrap Colorfast in Smokescreen and it turned out amazing. Good luck!
