I have a couple of reels I would like to experiment with Custom coloring. I have seen the epoxy marbling at one of the expos which I guess is one option. I have also seen ads for painted reels. Does anyone know of a type or brand of paint that would hold up to the use a reel gets.

I have used several brands of air brush paint intended for auto / bike detailing. The solvent based paints yield the best results IMO. I then clear coat with an automotive 2 part clear. I would recommend thoroughly wet sanding all parts to be painted, and remove virtually all scratch marks and chips in the process. The better you can clean up along all joints, and the top side the happier you will be. Reassembly of the reel will get tricky if you apply to much clear coat on the joint surfaces or get paint on the surfaces of where the spool rims would normally just barely clear. It is best to just tape off the spool openings. Re: Reel Paint

Thanks for the response. Can these paints be bought in small quantities? I would hate to end up with a quart.

Rick,
You may want to check out powder painting the metal parts of your reels. It should provide a more durable finish. I have heard of people using this approach, but have no personal experience. [www.cabelas.com] Don Re: Reel Paint
