Mark,
Volume 5, issue 5 has an article by Ralph O'Quinn, "Making and using a finishing spatula".
Highly informative.
I hope this helps.

Mark,
If you decide to go the spatula route to apply finish, I suggest that you do a bunch of testing and trying and learning on some old scrap blanks and tied up guides.

I have gone the entire route from sable brushes to a dozen different spatulas of different types, shapes and materials.

I have discarded all of them have gone back to the single use inexpensive throw away brush - simlar to the brushes that are packaged with flex coats in their finish kits.

I have simply found that these inexpensive brushes work very well, never have to clean them since you only use them once.

I also found that for myself, I just never got the finish applied the way that I liked it applied when I used a spatula, no matter how much I practiced and no matter how many different materials and shapes that I used.

But, certainly pick up a few different one and try for yourself. Lots and lots of builders do use spatulas with great success. I just found that for myself, it simply wasnt't my tool of choice.

Roger
