I was asked to replace broken tips on some old rods and the guides are tarnished; gold as well as possibly chrome. What is recommended to bring back the color? Is it even possible. Individual would rather not replace all the guides. Thanks, Bill Re: Cleaning Guides

Bill, You might try NEVR-DULL polishing wadding, or Flitz cleaner/polish. I know that you can find NEVR-DULL at most auto parts stores, and I think I've even seen it at Wal-mart (but it may have been in the household cleaning products isle). As far as Flitz, I'm not real sure to get it. It is one of those products that I actually pick up at places like flea markets and state fairs. Sounds like an info-mercial product, but it does work quite well (I do think that it is a bit more potent than the Nevr-dull, in case that's a concern). Jeff A. Question

Bill, are they "tarnished" or "corroded"? Big difference in how to handle the problem. If corroded, they will continue to corrode after you clean them if the guy doesn't keep them sprayed all the time. When chrome plated and gold plated guides corrode they start flaking the finish off and eventually you have a large mess on your hands. You can clean the corrosion with CLR mixed 1 part to about 10 parts water. You may have to adjust the mixture or soak longer. If tarnished, try Brasso or Semichrome polish. Re: Question
