My friend broke his Castaway 6'6", 2 inches above the reel seat, trying to take the seat off, using pliers, how would sleeve, I really don't know what to call it, its to hold the 2 parts together, then I would wrap it, maybe with a tiger wrap, and hope that it will hold, he is really to busy to work on it, so i thiought I will give him a hand.

Actually, this splice is pretty easy.

1. Remove the butt cap on the rod.
2. Obtain a section of rod blank that will be a nice tight fit on the inside of the rod so that you can insert the blank up the rod butt and have the tight fitting blank section protrude about 3-4 inche out of the broken butt section.
3. Obtain another section of rod blank that will be a nice tight fit on the outside of the broken butt section, and after removing the wraps on the butt section and the winding check insure that the outer sleeve is a nice tight fit on the outside of the butt section.
4. Remove the butt wraps on the upper portion of the rod butt wrap and if necessary slightly enlarge the oversleeve so that you can slip the oversleeve into the upper section of the rod.
5. Don't trim the broken pieces of the rod butt handle side or the tip side. You want the broken pieces to essentially interlock to form a "key" to align the rod and to increase the gluing area of the break.
6. Have everything pre fit and ready to assemble.
7. Have a push stick prepared to be able to push the inner sleeve up into the rod butt after gluing.
8. Mix up a batch of 5 minute epoxy, apply glue to all of the pieces and glue the inner sleeve, the tip section, and the outer sleeve. Have the outer sleevr pushed up the tip section before applying the glue. Then, with the butt and inner sleeve in place and the tip section brought down to the butt section, with the "key" aligned - apply glue to the upper section and slide the outer sleeve in place.
9. Use alchol to clean up any residual glue before allowing the glue to dry.
10. Overwrap the ends of the outersleeve for at least 1/2 inch on each end of the repair. You may incorporate this into a continuous butt wrap if it makes sense for your rod as well as any decorative wraps you might want to replace at this time.
11. Coat the wraps with wrap finish, dry and you will be good to go.

p.s.
Since you are in one of the most stressed part of the rod, you want to be sure to use both the inner sleeve as well as the outersleeve to insure that you have a good repair.

p.p.s.
If this is a two piece rod, you will find that you can actually get a neater and cleaner repair, by removing the butt guide and wrap so that you can simply take the tigh fitting outersleee and simply slip it down the rod, starting from the top of the butt section. This will mean that you don't have to enlarge any part of the outersleever to get the tup section to fit into the tapered outersleeve.

Try to clean the inside and outside of all the pieces for a good bond.

Be quick with the 5 min it drys fast. Or use the regular rod bond, just will take overnight to dry.
