I went ahead with the trial of permagloss over snakeskin. Put snakeskin on a wood dowel and coated it with 2 coats of CP, let dry overnight and followed up with 3 coats of permagloss applied with a brush at 4 rpm and allowed to dry between coats. Looks good and I'm sure it will hold up on handl;es. I'm going to try it now on a completed rod. Re: follow up on permagloss on snakeskin

Curious : What about no CP ???
Or no CP and use finish instead of permagloss ? Bill - willierods.com Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 09/15/2010 03:27PM by bill boettcher. Re: follow up on permagloss on snakeskin

Sam, I do alot of snake skin, thanks for the update!
What type of skin did you use? Depending on what I use it's hard to get 3 coats of epoxy to cover properly. How many coats of PG are you planning on using? I'd love to see some pictures when you're done. jeremy Re: follow up on permagloss on snakeskin

Bill,
Heavy CP is usually used on the back of the skin to make it soft and adhere to the blank and then a coat is put on top. When it sets, the skin is trimmed. Jeremy, Where do you get your skins? Are thy properly cured? They are much more supple and easier to work with if their are none of the clrear scale covering on them Mike (Southgate, MI) If I don't want to, I don't have to and nobody can make me (except my wife) cuz I'm RETIRED!! Bill, this was a follow up on using skin on a handle. When I do a skin on a rod I use epoxy but on a handle I wanted something to take the wear better and I use permaglos over wood on a handle often so I was curious on what it would do to a skin. I believe using permagloss without CP on a skin would result in the skin soaking it up and decolorizing. The original work with snake skins warned against , this using epoxy and no CP.
Jeremy, I used a scrap of rattle snake skin on a wood dowel to simulate a wood handle, I used 3 coats of permaglos which is the same as I use on a straight wood handle. This seems to give me good coverage but you could use more if that is what you want, however it is hard to get the same look of epoxy as permagloss is much thinner, same as doing thread with it.
