Thread Wrap Below Ferrules?

I have recently seen a number of multi-piece factory fly rods where there is a wrap of thread on each section, below the spot where the ferrule of the next section up overlaps.
I was curious --- is this a fashion thing or is there a structural reason for this? I have had rods break near or at a ferrule, but the breaks were ABOVE the overlap. Thanks, Tony Re: Thread Wrap Below Ferrules?

What type ferrules were these? Tip or butt or spigot/plug ferrules? The latter generally require a wrap on each side of the spigot.

I have one of these rods at home as my brother lost a guide and I am repairing it. I will look tonight.
I am 90% sure it is butt over tip. Thanks, Tony Re: Thread Wrap Below Ferrules?

Once upon a time fly rod blanks were wrapped above and below the ferrules and "registration" or "alignment" dots were wrapped in with thread. As Tom already wrote both if spigot / one if not. Re: Thread Wrap Below Ferrules?

If it's a tip over butt style then it's purely cosmetic, or used for alignment as Ken suggested.

No dots on there, so must be PURELY cosmetic.
Thanks, Tom and Ken. Re: Thread Wrap Below Ferrules?

Tony,
Although it may not be necessary, I always wrap the tip section at the joint for the tip over style multi piece rods. I just feel more secure by having thread run to about 1/64th from the joint to insure that there is never an issue with splitting at the joint. I normally don't do any wraps on the part of the rod that is inserted into the other part of the rod. One isse that can happe with this wrap. If the wrap is too close to the joint and as the rod wears and gets used, the part of the rod that is inserted into the other part of the rod generally will gradually work further into the joint. If the thred wrap on the lower part of the rod, is too close to the joint, an issue may occur such that the wraps hits the other rod section before the joint is tight. Take care Roger Re: Thread Wrap Below Ferrules?

Not sure if Roger's first sentence is describing what I do, but based on a guy I've bought several blanks from - I think he may have been a sponsor on this site at one time - he recommended a wrap a little ways down the ferrule over the area where the end of the inserted section stopped. I have no clue whether this is worth the effort or not but I've been putting a 1/4" wide or so wrap there on the lower sections for added strength - especially near the bend point - on every multi-piece rod I've built - whether it's needed or not. But I usually don't do that on the upper sections.
Actuall I just remembered that his first name was Dan - but I don't remember his last name. Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 09/15/2010 10:55AM by Tim Collins. Re: Thread Wrap Below Ferrules?

There is no inserted end into the male section.
I'm guessing you mean at the top of the male section inside the female ferrule? ............ Re: Thread Wrap Below Ferrules?

Yes I would say that's another way of saying where "the end of the inserted section stopped". Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
