How long between coats of epoxy should I wait to put the second or third coat on, do I have to wait till it hardens? Re: How long between coats

I apply the next coat as soon as the previous one feels dry to the touch. (I touch-test the leftover epoxy, not that on the wraps.) I think you could ruin the previous coat if it is still wet when you put on the next one. Re: How long between coats

When the previous coat is no longer tacky, you are good to go. You do need to apply subsequent coats BEFORE the previous coat hardens. There is a chemical "bonding" that takes place to meld them together. A good "rule of thumb" is no less than 6 and no more than 36. You should be almost always just fine with those numbers. If I may interject - I think that Jim is referring to HOURS, when he uses the 6 and 36 numbers.
If I recoat, I would likely use a number like 6-10 hours between coats. Roger Re: How long between coats

Lorenzo -
If you go to the top of the page you can click on "Search". Type the topic, then change the "Date" to All. The great thing about this forum is the vast amount of information from top rodbuilders. There is literally years of posts to look through. You should check into the information on micro guides. Search for "M&M". This is a very good subject to start off with. I have tested "2 layer coatings" with the second coat done at 36, 49, 72 & 96 hours and have not been able to separate the two coats at any point. They appear to be one entity. This is with Threadmaster epoxy. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
