How long between coats of epoxy should I wait to put the second or third coat on, do I have to wait till it hardens?

I apply the next coat as soon as the previous one feels dry to the touch. (I touch-test the leftover epoxy, not that on the wraps.) I think you could ruin the previous coat if it is still wet when you put on the next one.

When the previous coat is no longer tacky, you are good to go. You do need to apply subsequent coats BEFORE the previous coat hardens. There is a chemical "bonding" that takes place to meld them together. A good "rule of thumb" is no less than 6 and no more than 36. You should be almost always just fine with those numbers.

If I may interject - I think that Jim is referring to HOURS, when he uses the 6 and 36 numbers.

If I recoat, I would likely use a number like 6-10 hours between coats.

I have tested "2 layer coatings" with the second coat done at 36, 49, 72 & 96 hours and have not been able to separate the two coats at any point. They appear to be one entity. This is with Threadmaster epoxy.
