I know this has probably been on here before, but i couldn't find anything in the search. Do you guys think that the woven graphite tubing from mudhole would make a good extension? I was going to do a 14 in. handle with 6 in. on the rod and 8 in. extended.

As the exterior grip material it would work just like on a blank not extended but as the OD is much larger than
the correct extension piece except for a huge rod butt I wouldn't think one could make it work as the actual extention.
Besides, without the rigidity of the blank or extension piece & support of the arbors the CF tubing could be crushed
or broken easier than one would like to think.

Extend the blank with a over-sleeved piece of aluminum tubing or scrap blank then mount the CF tubing.

You might be able to get away with just the CF tubing if you had only 1/2 the CF tubing devoid of support on a very
ultra-light rod and you were very careful not to drop the rod down on it's butt.

Hi Jason, depending on the type of rod you are building, you could definitely do that. I've extended many rods just the way you are thinking. Plus, that is one of the premises with AMTAK's Vetre Matrix Handle. We've built many rods with as little as 2.5 inches being supported and 8" of extension with tubing that has .025 wall thickness. up to 14" of extension with .050 thickness and 6" of support. The butt cap acts as a plug, similar to the way you plug a male ferrule on a 2- piece rod, to give additional hoop strength to the tube. Like I said, depending on the rod, but we used extensions and AMTAK's Vetre Matrix Handles up to 30lb test and 40+ pound fish without any issues. Just be sure the tube is clean and scored to get a good bond.

As long as the tubing is at least as stiff and strong as the blank butt you are mating it to, all should be well.

Jason -- The tubing we offer at Mud Hole Custom Tackle will plenty strong enough to perform the task you have mentioned. The lay-up of 6" on the blank and 8" beyond the blank, as the extension will work just fine.

As Bob mentioned, won't be a problem at all as long as you have a good fit and the carry over onto the blank is at least 40% of the extension piece being used. I have used the tubing for just that purpose several times with no issues what so ever.

Why does the carry over have to be 40%?

I've used the full 20+ inches of the ones sold by mudhole with about 4 inches of the blank inside it. I find it to be extremely strong, probably way stronger than the guys at mudhole say (they need to give themselves a little room for operator error - thats a good thing).
Ive fished 30lb spectra fishing offsore SoCal with over ten pounds of drag. No prob at all. I used to make my own tubing with the stuff I used for skinned grips. When you look at the fact that they include grips, seat, butt cap and a ton of bling, how can you go wrong????!!!!!!

Just my opinion, and has worked for me for several years. I've seen rods break at the connection points due to both poor fit and not enough material overlap. But more so my opinion.
