What would be the advantages of anodizing?

Ken,
Some of us have acid hands (me being one) and anodizing eliminates rust on the lathe head. My head is as brown as dirt because I emit rust in my hand perspiration.

Raw metal and salt air just don't mix. Did you ever see one done in black and gold? Sharp !!

This site lists shops all across the country that perform various types of plating / finishing of metal parts using various processes:

If you are talking about a steel lathe head then it won't work because steel cannot be anodized. I would suggest looking into powder coating. If you are talking about aluminum parts then the benefits would be increased corrosion resistance and better wear qualities because anodizing hardens the surface of aluminum.

Darrell,

I anodized my Renzetti lathe a couple years ago and if you think these rod lathes look nice, then anodized is absolutely beautiful! There are a few pieces that still are aluminum silver and the contrasts is very nice. I never realized anyone else anodized their lathe until I saw this thread, and as mentioned there are other very good reasons. I'm surprised that Renzetti hasn't offered this as an option yet. I see Renzetti does this to his fly tying vices for the exact reasons I mentioned.

I anodized mine for two reasons: 1 - aesthetics, the aluminum silver color in contrast with the black. I like it, I paid for it and that is what I received! 2 - I think benefits received is less glare from lights. That is a big piece of aluminum reflecting light directly into one's face/eyes working, well I've eliminated most of that!

Thank you for your time,

~Mark

Find your local paintball pro-shop. If they do gun work, they can either do it in-house or have the contacts who can.

Barry,

I recently moved and it's packed. I'll be unpacking in the next week or two, I have a saltwater rod I need to complete.
So just give me a bit of time.

If you email me directly with your address I'll shoot you an email notice of my post.

P.S. I forgot I actually have two pictures. I'll look into posting them tonight. I don't quite know how easy/difficult it is to post and set up a folder on this site and I won't have the time until later tonight.

Thank you for your time,

~Mark
