Looking for the best way to clean cork grips that are slightly dirtied from hand sweat and a bit of grime WITHOUT sanding. Anyone got any secrets?

I use an old toothbrush, and liquid dish soap. Rinse well with running water. Just make sure that you let the grips dry well before you put the rod in a case.

My trick is a toothbrush and baking soda. After getting the surface dirt off, I finish with 4/0 steel wool.

Bill, is right on the money with the cork magic. This stuff cleans the cork and don't leave a soapy residue after cleaned like the simple green and other concentrated cleaners do, especially after getting them wet again. After cleaned it leaves the cork feeling like new cork, not a better cork cleaner made. I use it on every repair, most guys don't even think its there rod when handing it to them.

I've been using Permatex "Fast Orange" hand cleaner, usually found in the automotive department. Put some in the palm of your hand and rub the grip lengthwise. Use caution if you have thread epoxy just forward of the grip, as Fast Orange has pumice in the formula. Fast Orange might scuff the epoxy coat.

Every rod that comes in with cork gets a quick shot of 91% Isopropyl alcohol applied by paper towel.
Quick, cheap and effective. I see a lot of fly rods where the rod grip is in hand all day and they
clean up with at the most 3 applications. No chemicals or scrubbing or rinse, just let it evaporate.

After you clean it - it is a good idea to put some kind of sealer on to help keep any dirt from - embedding - into the cork. This way it is a lot easier to clean again.

I use microfiber towels. They're cheap -- any auto parts store -- and a little dish soap in a lot of water. You'll be surprised how much dirt remains on a "clean" grip when you use one of these towels. I don't use anything else and my grips are CLEAN.
