CP more than once

Hopefully this post will not start a debate on using CP or not using CP. I am interested in finding out the pros and cons of using more than one coating of CP on threads. I have heard people say that you need more than one coat of CP on certain threads in order to preserve the color, obviously, non-NCP threads. I am also thinking that the white substance in the CP, Flex Coat's water based stuff at least, perhaps titanium oxide, will alter the color, since it is white. If the pros and cons of multiple uses has been discussed on this forum, perhaps someone could point me to the relevant thread. Thanks. Clinton

Use / non-use of CP is the builder's option. When I use CP, admittedly not very often, I use two coats with adequate drying time between coats.

A single full, wet coat is generally all that's needed. If you're worried about your application or have thinned your CP (not a good idea) then two coats is added insurance and won't hurt a thing. Beyond that, you're just building depth. If you haven't sealed the thread with a couple wet coats, something is wrong or you've thinned your CP and are simply apply water to your wraps.

Clinton, for all practical purposes I don't use CP. Therefore I don't feel I can judge them. So I have a favor to ask.

Would you be willing to try a few of the brands I have, compare to what you use, and offer your thoughts? Who knows, maybe you will end up finding something you like better?

I use CP on 98% of my wraps and generally only use multiple coats on very light thread wraps. Don't know that makes any difference, but it makes me feel better.

Absolutely...Russ, glad to. I do not have a problem with what I have...I am just seeking information based on experience and knowledge. For me personally, I both use and do not use CP, as CP can serve many purposes in rod building....not the least of which it holds things in place. But more importantly, I am interested in color, so if I can gain the color I want by using CP, I use it, but this requires experimentation. Some threads are a certain color without CP...but they have most generally been treated and are not pure nylon. Some threads like polyneon require a lot of CP to hold their color, at least on the few threads of this that I have. So, in some cases, if I want a certain color out of a thread, I used one coat of CP and then apply epoxy. But if I apply another coat, and then apply the epoxy I get another color all together. I have made up color wands using different amounts of CP to see what happens. But I have not used lots and lots of it, so I do not know where the limit is or if there is any. I would think that things would get whitish or milky like if many coats were applied. Maybe there is a point where the color no longer changes. Now, if I had an unlimited amount of threads, I could probably just pick. But if I had 20 colors of nylon, I would probably have 30 or 40 or more different colors depending upon how much CP I use. Since I have only used on type of CP, the results might be different for different types of CP, as you suggest.

applying more than one coat = cheap insurance against poor coverage/silicone/contamination

applying to much can lead to a white haze with some products and add un-needed build time.

We use 1 good coat, allowed to dry. Seems to work well. You can always do a test on a section of old rod. Apply 1 good coat. Then add 2 coats to another thread of the same color. Compare.

I`m with Ray. I use two coats just incase I may have a thin area. I have found applying one heavy coat leaves a haze and seems to cause the thread to swell.

That was my 2 cents
