Vertical Mill

In response to my question on complex dado's a few days ago, the decision has been made to add a vertical mill to the shop. I'd appreciate any and all input, as they aren't cheap and this is a tool I'm vaguely familiar with. I've checked out the Sherline 5400 and Taig Micro and they look about right, but I'd like to hear from those who have worked behind these models or any others you would recommend. The upper limit is 100 pounds and I need the unit to double as a drill press. CNC ready is a bonus, since I'd love to have it one day, but durability and usability trump CNC. Thanks in advance.

Both the units you mention are small, but highly accurate and well made. If they have the capacity to do what you want, it will be hard to go wrong with either. Plenty of attachments are available for both.

You can also look at the Smithy vertical mill/drill/lathe. It's an oriental tool but remains a lot of tool for the money. The combination machines do require a bit more time in set up.

Jason,
Another good small mill is the unimat.
You can often find these used for a very good price. They have been around for years and years but are still a quality little tool that should do just fine for your needs.

Thanks Tom and Roger. I'm busy digging into the details. Very good information and exactly what I was hoping for.
