Does a turned wood reel seat have to be resin-impregnated? I have some kiln-dried zebra wood stock that I would like to turn. Or, is there something that I can do as a alternative to strengthen the piece after it's turned? Re: resin-impregnated wood question

Some prefer to use stabilized wood for reel seats and grips. Most of my reel seat inserts are not stabilized, however I do apply a protective finish to all of my reel seat inserts.

no stabilised wood is not necessary for use on a rod. i use all kinds of woods, some stabilised and some unstabilised. the wood needs to be finished well with a finish that can withstand the use it is put through. zebra wood is fine. i would not worry about using it at all. an easy yet very durable finish is the Petri urethane. it is a wipe-on finish and can be applied on the lathe.
