Last week I had the privledge of fishing the Kenai in AK for King salmon. We hooked a few really good ones but didn't put any in the boat. My guide and I were talking about rod choice and he told me about a rod he really loved but he couldn't get. Right now he is using Norwest Special by Lamiglass. He talked about a rod one of his friends used and called it a Kenai Quick made by Lamiglass. The rods we were using were very slow in action and soft in the back bone. The further we talked the more I questioned that the rods were a big part of the reason for the solid hook ups a dead line within a few seconds. Has anyone heard of this rod or is it possibly a prototype?
Any help would be appreciated. It only costs pennies more to be first class Re: back trolling king salmon rod

The imported Lamiglas rod you mentioned isn't imported as a blank, but Lamiglas makes some very similar backbouncing blanks in many materials. Getting with Todd Vivian at Mudhole would sure help in your quest for the right blank, he worked at Lamiglas for many years. Re: back trolling king salmon rod

You may have heard him wrong. Lamiglas made a rod called "Kenai King" if I remember correctly or it may have been the "Kenai Special". I remember seeing them when I came to Alaska. For me at the time it was a spendy rod. I decided to save myself some money and learn to build my own.......lol I would highly encourage anyone that is coming to Alaska, and paying for a guided trip, ask about the gear you will be using. I have heard of and seen all kinds of gear snafu's on guided trips. Dont let your trip be spoiled by poor equipment. Just my 10 cents Re: back trolling king salmon rod

Thanks for your input and for your 10 cents worth. All aside though I had him write down the name of the rod for me. So maybe he got it wrong but it doesnt really matter except for me having more expierence with rod building and even if the rods were the cause of loosing a couple of big Kings we had a great time in Alaska. You people who respond to the thousands of posts are priceless because of your expierence and knowledge that you pass on to others.
Thanks a ton. It only costs pennies more to be first class Re: back trolling king salmon rod

Steve,
If the rod I'm thinking of is correct it was 7'11" or 8'2"? Both were IM700 bouncers designed for use in Alaska. Lamiglas doesn't build this blank any longer but I know of a comparable model which would perform very well for you. Steve you are correct it is a new rod. It came out in the middle of last year and has been very successful. They are 9'3" and composite. The rod model number in XCC934 the blank is XSH1112H there is also a 10'6" version both use the Kenai quick name.
Good luck Josh Re: back trolling king salmon rod

I think they actually spell it 'Kenai Kwik.' As in Kwikfish. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
