Im trying to slow my wood lathe down.Is there a formula to use to figure out a combination of pulleys to use with a known motor rpm to arrive at a particular driven shaft rpm? Re: Lathe Pulley RPM Formula

Bruce,
A link to help: [www.anvilfire.com] The following math formula will also work very well: ========================================= Calculating the speed differences for the various pulley sizes is a simple matter of doing the math for each combination. Example: The sum of the speed of the motor output pulley (drive pulley) multiplied by the diameter of that pulley; divided by the diameter of the input (driven) pulley. The speed of the driving pulley is, of course, equal to the RPM of the motor you're using. A 1750 RPM motor equipped with a 2 1/8 inch pulley driving a 4 inch pulley on the lathe spindle will turn the lathe spindle at approx. 930 rpm. The same setup, using a 2 inch pulley on the motor, will drive the lathe spindle at approx. 875 rpm. Not a lot of difference there. Roger Re: Lathe Pulley RPM Formula

That is some real nice info there ...
I've wondered for a while what rpm's my lathes are really turning. I'm going to attempt to use a small bike odometer to register rpm's so I can try for consistency in what I do. Re: Lathe Pulley RPM Formula

Motor RPM X Motor Pulley Dia. = Lathe RPM X Lathe Pulley Dia. ; then isolate your unknown, which is likely: Lathe RPM= (Motor RPM X Motor Pulley Dia.) / Lathe Pulley Dia. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
