I have scattered dimples through out my finish and I am unsure why. I put on 1 coat and the second coat 6 hours later. It has been spinning the entire time. Did I mix it wrong? 1/2 & 1/2 Did I put it on too thick? How can I fix it now?
Thanks Jeremy Re: Dimples in the flex coat

Did you clean the blank first? Could be "fish eye" effect from a number of things. Are they "dimples" or small spots of dust/debis? IF this is the case wait till cured then with a very sharpe blade cut them off and re-coat with a very thin layer of finsih. If it is the fish eye effect, wait till it is cured, sand with a 400 grit paper, clean well and refinish with a light coat. You should be good then.
Just a thought, good luck in your fix. Eric Re: Dimples in the flex coat

Does it look like the craters of the moon ? If so fish eyes. Contamination.
Did you wax any thing, did your wife clean the furniture . Bill - willierods.com Re: Dimples in the flex coat

It does look like moon craters. We did not wax anything but I did use some bubble buster. Could that have done it? Re: Dimples in the flex coat

Don't know, never tried it. I use thin finish and never get bubbles. Don't think you need it Bill - willierods.com Re: Dimples in the flex coat

I buy the thick stuff and thin it.
I never have had any problems with curing or any thing. Just do not make it like water - too thin. Bill - willierods.com Re: Dimples in the flex coat

Sometimes the bubble buster can be the problem. If you aren't real careful with the "squeeze", you can get alcohol mist instead of just heat and those little mist drops (that you probably won't see in the air) could be causing the craters. You may not see them right away either and it can be shock to flame the wrap, go away and return to a mess of craters. If you use heat, it's better to just wave the lamp under or beside the wrap instead of trying to "blow" away the bubbles. Re: Dimples in the flex coat

Alcohol CAN cause dimples and craters if it hits the finish while wet. I've had it happen. Re: Dimples in the flex coat

How about your method of putting on the finish? If your using brushes make sure they are not holding contaminates as well as any other tool you use to apply the finish. Re: Dimples in the flex coat

Jeremy,
Don't thin your finish. If you apply your finish and find that it is not flowing out the way that you want it to flow, just use a bit of gentle heat from a hair dryer or a heat gun. The finish will thin, the finish will flow nicely and any bubbles that might have been in the finish will flow out when the finish levels. Take care Roger Re: Dimples in the flex coat

How about an alcohol burner? Re: Dimples in the flex coat

How about it? They are fine. Use it. Remember, some finish does not like heat, LS for example, others can take a lot of heat, like FlexCoat. Just be careful with it. It can burn finish, burn threads, boil the finish, spray finish with drops and can be messy on the work bench. But, at least to me, it's a necessary evil. You just have to put in the time and find out what finish works for you. As for the burner, most distributors carry one, I like the inexpensive squeeze bottles like the Keystone, I've even burned up a few!! Re: Dimples in the flex coat

Do your self a favor. Use a light finish. No heat no bubble buster. Keep you finish room around 70 or even lower I like the cooler temps, takes longer to set but flows REAL nice. Don't load the finish on use two coats. First to seal it, then fix any boos boos . Then second coat. if you put too much finish on easy fix. Stop the turner, let excess drip, whip off with brush. Then turn again.
Ya i thin heavy finish - no one has ever told me of any problems I clean my brushes with Mid Temp Lacquer Thinner. Works well Bill - willierods.com Re: Dimples in the flex coat
